What are Comp Titles and why do we need them?

This is a question that has come up a fair bit in the group with the debut Authors. It is something that you will see all around but may not have paid any attention to.

  1. What are comp titles?

  2. When should you think about your comp titles?

  3. Why do you need them?

  4. How many should you have?

  5. How can they help you sell your book?

While putting together the marketing packages for the novella series we realised that we needed to make things relatable to readers. While you are in the creation phase it is all about bring out the best story. Working through the narrative arc. refining your story structure. Building immersive settings that highlight the core foundations of the story you want to tell. Write, rewrite and write is all out again. All within a set timeframe.

*The timeframe is not necessarily a concern if you are writing a story just for yourself. But in any collaborative work it is important.

Once the story is established; it is time to work toward the Marketing and PR. This is easier for some than it is for others. You need to work a different muscle when you are working on copy material. This has never really come easy for me. But it is something that is important to learn how to refine the way you share details of your works. This includes Social media posting, articles, what you say in interviews. The synopsis, the blurb and the topic of today, Comp Titles.

What are Comp Titles?

Comp is short for Comparable/Competitive. These can be other books, tv show or movies that align with elements of your story.

When should you think about Comp Titles?

This is personal choice like all things creative. Ideally when you are writing your synopsis and preparing to pitch it is good to have your comp titles handy.

Why do you need them?

Comp titles are useful to help editors, agents and new readers learn about the genre, tone and general vibe of your book. This will either peak their interest, or not.

How many should you have?

Generally between 1 and 3. If there are too many it can be confusing. But sometimes 2 isn't enough.

How can they help Sell your Books?

Comp Titles can be used for marketing materials and draw new people into your story. When it comes to selling your book, having a good comp title or three will open the door to people who already have an established fan base.

I think that I may do a pert 2 of this after the series is out because then I can give you live examples of the books in the Otherworldly Emergence Series.

I hope that you found this interesting.
